Being a working mum is a full-time job in itself. Add full-time study into the mix, and suddenly, life feels a little chaotic. If you’re in the trenches, trying to balance a career, motherhood, and education, you’re not alone.
This post is for you.
While I’m nearing the end of my study commitments, I’m right there with you. Here’s what’s helping me stay sane (most of the time!):
Accept That Balance Is a Myth
Let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as perfect balance. If you believe there is, you’ll constantly feel disappointed because life is unpredictable. Kids get sick, work deadlines get moved, and sometimes, life throws unexpected curveballs.
I learned this from a mentor who once told me that when you’re working towards a goal, work-life balance is a myth. Instead, focus on work-life (and study) integration.
Some days, work will demand more of you, other days, your kids will need extra attention. And then there are times when your coursework takes centre stage. Instead of striving for balance, aim to integrate your goals into your life and this is where prioritisation comes in.
Each week, identify your non-negotiables and be flexible with everything else. For example, after returning from Ireland, I had just a month to complete my course before the deadline. I had to ask for an extension and say no to most social events except for a few, like my kids’ birthdays.
Get Ruthlessly Organised
Time management is your best friend. Here’s what works for me:
Plan your week ahead. Every Sunday, I sit down with my planner and map out work commitments, study blocks, and family time.
Use time-blocking. I swear by this. I time-block everything even when I clean my house. Allocating specific hours for work, study, and family helps me stay focused.
Leverage digital tools. I use apps like Google Calendar, Excel, and Tasks (though I love the satisfaction of crossing things off a notepad). Some people prefer Trello or Asana - find what works for you.

Set Realistic Expectations
It’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to excel in every role, best employee, high-achieving student, and super mum. I see you, Type A mama! But the reality is some days, you’re just doing your best to get through, and that’s good enough.
Give yourself grace. It’s okay if the laundry piles up or if dinner is takeout some nights. Your mental and physical health matter more. And if you need an extension, don’t feel guilty that’s what it’s there for.
Master the Art of Saying No
Not every school committee, social event, or work project needs your help. Be intentional about what you commit to. If it doesn’t align with your priorities right now, give yourself permission to decline.
Some people might be disappointed or even frustrated. But think of it as exercising your boundaries. Chances are, once you finish your course, they’ll be celebrating you and probably wondering how on earth you managed it all!
Take Care of Yourself (Seriously!)
Burnout is real, and it can sneak up on you if you’re not careful. Prioritise self-care, even if it’s just 10 minutes of meditation, a short walk, or a cup of tea in silence. Your energy and well-being matter.

Remember Why You Started
When things get overwhelming (and they will), remind yourself why you took on this challenge. Whether it’s a better career, financial freedom, or being a role model for your kids, keeping your “why” in focus will help you push through. Sounds corny but it will help in times when you would rather crawl into bed than open up your laptop again.
Balancing work, study, and motherhood isn’t easy, but it’s possible with the right mindset and strategies. If I can do it, so can you!
Some days will be tough, but you’re stronger than you think. Keep going, and don’t forget to celebrate the small wins along the way.
